“Ashley Brooke Designs is for the girl who loves life and is always looking for an opportunity to be just a bit sassy! We realize life can be difficult; Ashley Brooke Designs isn’t. We’re having a party, and we want you along for the ride.”

How would you describe your creative process?

My life in general is a bit crazy, and so the sassiness and the touch of girly-snark just comes out and I will realize, “Gosh! That would be cute on a mug!” Also, I have stopped designing for what I think my clients might like and I’ve started designing for myself and things that I need… like a Happy Thoughts notepad!

What’s the most collaborative creative team you’ve ever worked with?

Absolutely Kendra Scott. We LOVE the girls over at KS!!

Who is your Style Icon? Why?

My style is preppy, girly, and classic… I don’t like to be any one of those things… I like when all three come together! Like a tutu and an oxford… the perfect match!

That being said, I have quite a few Style Icons, but right now I really love Miranda Kerr’s style. I mean honestly —> http://www.pinterest.com/pin/24488391697239517/

We’ve all been there- what has been your worst fashion mishap?

Oh gosh, there are WAYYYY too many to count. Although I used to rock a pair of baby blue overalls like it was my J-O-B.

What is your favorite LBC piece?

The Raleigh! Love it!!

What is your favorite part of your job?

The ability to build and create something that I am truly proud of, even though each day has its own struggle. I get to wake up every morning and do what I know that I am good at, and there really isn’t a better feeling. I would be lying if I didn’t say that I also reallllly like being my own boss. When I was little, I would get in trouble on the REGULAR for being a bit too bossy. My dad would say (daily), “You being so bossy is one of my favorite qualities you possess, and one day this whole bossy thing will work to your advantage, but child, today is not that day.” Ha! So I guess being my own boss was kind of inevitable!

Friendship: Dos and Don’ts

Be a Best Friend to have a Best Friend!
20140508-084726.jpg

(Thank you to my fabulous best friends for modeling a few of my pieces!)

My best friends might live hundreds of miles away from me now, but as soon as i step back into our old town- things go right back to where they left off. I’m so thankful for the time (even though short) that I got to spend with these girls this week and all that they have become and are becoming!

Friends are just such an important part of our lives. I’ve been blessed to have wonderful friends come into my life through the years. Some have remained and others have drifted away- I haven’t always been the best friend, but I’ve learned a lot of lessons and hopefully have gotten better over the years.

Here are a few things I’ve come to realize about how to stay close, even through life changes, phases and stages!

Dos!

If she tells you a secret, keep it a secret! Don’t be THAT friend.

Respect her choices- This doesn’t mean you support everything they do or every choice they make, but you HAVE to make your friend understand that you support her through everything. That you appreciate them and what they stand for- even the things you aren’t so proud of.

Be honest BUT timely. If you don’t think her outfit is a good choice tell her before she buys it or before she leaves the house. Leaning over in the while walking into the restaurant and saying ‘What were you thinking?!’ is never a good move!

Discuss issues before they become problems- Sometimes the things we love most about people also drive us a little crazy. This is completely normal! We all need our own unique flavor to add to the mix.

Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Return what you borrow- Once again, don’t be THAT friend.

Give honest advice- Honesty is always key!

Accept your limitations – you’re not Dr. Phil. Shoulder to cry on or a listening ear – yes. In-depth psychological assistance – be careful and direct her elsewhere if necessary.

Never forget the value of a true friend. Priceless. Take good care of her and she will last you a lifetime, there’s not much else that can say that.

Don’ts!

Never gossip about your friend! Ever. Never ever.

If your friend doesn’t want to talk about something, respect their privacy.

Don’t knock her choices, be it handbags or boyfriends.

When she speaks badly about her husband/boyfriend/partner – neither agree nor disagree. Shrug your shoulders, nod, and leave it at that.

Don’t be devious, tricky or sneaky.

Don’t make promises you can’t keep.

Don’t be a Behavior Monitor (even if she asks you). It is her responsibility to know when she’s had enough biscuits or beer.

Don’t judge.

If you honestly feel a friendship is past its sell-by-date then end it – don’t drag it on.

Don’t lie to your friend – ever. Not to protect her, nor to protect yourself. Once the trust is broken it will never be the same.

MOST IMPORTANTLY

Grow with them
A friendship is a living breathing thing. It won’t always look the same or fall into the same patterns. If you really value your friend, let the relationship grow through all stages of life.

Laugh
The central theme of most of my dearest friendships is laughter. Being able to laugh together about ourselves is medicine for the soul.

Bare your soul
If you find a true friend, you’re so fortunate. Be your authentic self around them and give them permission to do the same. Even if there are difficult things that come up!

Be Grateful
So many people in the world are lonely. If you have a friend whose heart is connected to yours, be grateful for them and show them that gratitude.

Remember- Everybody isn’t meant to be best friends with everybody else (that’s the worst misconception I have ever had), but when you do find those people you are fortunate enough to call your “Best Friends”, it’s so important to hold onto them!

CLASSIC KENTUCKY MINT JULEP: Even if your at home, the derby festivities must go on!

20140503-190705.jpg

(Special thanks to my fiancé, Isaac for being such a great model! )

It’s finally here! The Kentucky Derby- when ladies and gentlemen gather at Churchill Downs to place their bets on the finest horses in the country. I still haven’t been to this race (definitely on my bucket list), but i usually manage to put on a great hat and find a fun place to attend in town. Turns out that the best Derby Day traditions is on you can stir up for yourself right at home: the classic Kentucky mint juleps. Traditionally served in a chilled silver cup, this simple bourbon cocktail packs a lot of a punch.

*Note- We recommend going heavy on the crushed ice, which will slightly dilute the drink as it melts.

CLASSIC KENTUCKY MINT JULEP

Ingredients

-2.5 ounces bourbon

-25-30 mint leaves

-ice cubes

-crushed ice

Syrup

-1/2 cup sugar

-1/2 water

-1 large bunch of mint leaves

Instructions

1. First, you’ll make the simple syrup. Combine the water and sugar and bring to a boil. Stir until the sugar has completely dissolved. Place the bunch of mint leaves in an old mason jar (or a heatproof container) and pour the syrup over the leaves. Place the jar in the fridge and let the leaves steep in the syrup for at least one hour. Strain the leaves from the liquid and set the syrup aside.

2.Place you 25-30 mint leaves in a cocktail shaker and pour in the 2.5 ounces of bourbon as well as one ounce of your syrup. Top with a few ice cubes and stir. Fill your chilled cup with ice about halfway. Strain the liquid from the cocktail shaker into the cup. Pack crushed ice on top of the liquid to top off the glass. Garnish the drink with a sprig of mint leaves and a straw

3. Place you bets and enjoy your drink!

 Master a simple centerpiece

Impress your guest with an easy, use-what-you’ve-got centerpiece. Nothing quite lightens and freshens your space like an arrangements of flowers painted in the middle any room. Make it a goal to have at least one vase ( although-i prefer mason jars) filled with freshly picked flowers at all times.

Return the favor

Just as you would never show up to a party empty handed, you should never return a dish empty. If someone brings you a covered dish, return it with a delicious treat! Being courteous has never tasted this good.

Interview: A day in the life of Brooke Carrico

20140430-222810.jpg

Let’s face it- When most of us find free time, we love looking through endless amounts of “pins”, polyver posts and getting updated on our favorite ‘insta’ celebs! We recently stumbled upon a southern gem, Miss Brooke Carrico, and were lucky enough to snag an interview with her for all of you! We are providing you with a little insight on the charm behind the posts! Bright, white and beautiful things are her favorite, and we couldn’t be any more excited about it! Ladies- you’re in for a treat!

What inspires your style??

Brooke: “I mostly get my styler inspirations from Bloggers, Pinterest , and other fashion bloggers on Instagram. I truly LOVE looking at new ideas for style and posts. I just love seeing how other people do things with their imagination! Also, my followers really give me A LOT of style inspirations- I love it!”

We’re all dying to know- When your not being a fabulous fashion inspiration to all of us, what is your favorite item of clothing? It’s okay to say yoga pants!

Brooke: “Ha ha I love all of my clothes! Big sweaters for class, and of course bright and bold colors for any other time; I can’t step outside of my house without a statement necklace or something Lilly! Sweaters are almost always my go-to when it comes to classes or when i’m on the go. I mainly wear black so i’m ALWAYS in need of some color! Naturally i go for bright statement pieces. I have an insane amount of statement necklaces and bracelets! I cannot control myself when I walk into a store, i seriously can’t! I cannot leave a store until i buy a necklace or pair of earrings (but hey, i’m not complaining)!”

In your opinion, what is this Summers “must have”?

Brooke: “I have a feeling that this Summer is going to be ‘All white everythin’ ‘, and of course having bright bling to go along with it! I’ve been foreshadowing this since winter and I am finally starting to see it in all the magazines! I’m so excited to try it out. My must haves are definitely bright statement pieces, and a couple (or a lot) of Lilly’s Spring collection (FYI- my fave is Lobstah Rollin’). OH! And high waisted shorts! I still don’t own a pair but I plan on breaking some in this Summer. Wish me luck!!!!”

As far as 2014 goes, what’ve been your absolute favorite trends?

Brooke: “A few of my favorite 2014 Spring/Summer trends have been all the colors; bright is ALWAYS better! Oh! and “Friendship baubles”. Also, what is summer without some lovely flower power? Flowers are always my favorites thing about Spring and Summer! You can’t go wrong with em’! Last but not least, i’ve been all over the shoulder totes! They are great for the beach, shopping and everything in between! Who wouldn’t want a bag that fits everything while still being chic???”

What’s your favorite piece on our collections and how are you going to wear it?

Brooke: “I’m honestly IN LOVE with everything LB Collections has! My favorite piece thus far has to be The Cape Cod necklace! I have been looking for a necklace like this for sooo long and I have thankfully found the perfect one! It’s beautiful. I’m matching it up with one of my little black dresses, or my white maxi! And of course finish the look off with some simple arm candy!”

Being a girl, we learn new beauty tricks almost ever day (thank you Pinterest), what has been your latest beauty discovery?

Brooke: “Hmm, my latest beauty discovery probably has to be “contouring”! I am truly obsessed, I have yet to master it- but I am obsessed! It’s seriously a great makeup skill to master, I mean who wouldn’t want to make their face look slimmer? ha ha I love it!”

We’ve all been there, what has been your worst fashion mishap?

Brooke: “AHH! my biggest fashion disaster? Doesn’t one happen almost every day!? Is that just me? “One” of my biggest disasters happens every time i wear white pants..so almost every other day! I don’t know why I wear them because i’m slightly messy… but nothing major has ever happened- just the usual ketchup stain!”

20140430-222823.jpg

We loved talking with Brooke! Her southern charm is executed perfectly in her style AND personality. Her modern, yet elegant look definitely makes her a ‘break time’ top choice!
